Community Payback

Unpaid Work in the Community

Community Payback is a new scheme offering the people of Cheshire a voice.
You decide how offenders pay back the community by nominating a project.

During 2005 in Cheshire, over 106,700 hours of compulsory unpaid work were completed by offenders. This work often goes unnoticed, which is why we are asking Cheshire residents to take part in deciding what kind of work is carried out.

Projects undertaken by offenders that have been of benefit to local communities in Cheshire include:

  • graffiti removal
  • litter clearance
  • repairing and redecorating community centres
  • environmental work, such as maintaining churchyards
  • specialist work at local heritage centres

Projects combine hard work with the prospect of achieving vocational and crucial life skills. These help to reduce the risk of re-offending and make the communities we live in safer places.

Five hundred and fifty hours of compulsory Unpaid Work has been undertaken at this project. In addition to the strimming and mowing of overgrown areas, sharp objects, barbed wire and other hazardous materials have also been removed from the grounds.

Work at this project includes building a patio, painting and gardening. So far the home has received five hundred hours of Unpaid Work. Projects at this placement are ongoing and a proposed scheme to create a pathway in the gardens will require a commitment of one thousand hours of Unpaid Work.

What's Involved?

The Cheshire Probation Area want Cheshire residents to nominate the projects that they would wish to see undertaken.

A nomination process is in place and we would encourage individuals, faith groups, businesses, voluntary groups and local authorities to nominate projects.

Once the work has been completed, a plaque will be displayed with the Community Payback logo. This will indicate where offenders have positively contributed to improving a neighbourhood.

To be considered, a project must meet the following criteria:

  • It must reduce the fear of crime by making the community safer.

  • It must benefit the local community.

  • It must not take paid work away from others.

  • No one must make a profit from the work.

  • It must be worthwhile, constructive and improve offenders' skills.

  • Offenders must be seen to be positively contributing to the local community.
